Assessment and Reporting Update

At Taradale Intermediate we want parents, caregivers and whānau to feel well informed about their child’s learning. From 2026, you may notice some changes in the way we assess and report progress, especially in reading, writing and maths. These changes are designed to make reporting clearer, more consistent, and easier to understand.

You may see some new language in school reports, including progress descriptors and information about how your child is progressing and what their next learning steps are. Some schools will also begin using SMART (Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Tool), a new online assessment tool being introduced from 2026.  Please note that we are not using the SMART tool until 2027.

We know that any change can take a little getting used to, so we will keep sharing information with you along the way. For more information, please visit the Parent Portal, read the Guide to your child’s reporting and progress, and talk with your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Term 1:  you will notice an effort and engagement post in HERO for your child in reading, writing, oral language, maths and statistics.

Term 2:  reports will be online on HERO at the end of Term 2.  We are just awaiting HERO to provide the new reporting format for us.

Learner Conferences

We will be holding Learner Conferences on the 19th and 20th of May early next term.  At this time teachers will be able to explain the new reporting descriptors that are being used from 2026 onwards.

This conference will be a goal setting one where we will focus on setting goals in reading. writing and maths.
